Air transport brings new hope to Mwanza

Mwanza. Improved flight service to and from Mwanza has relieved pains inflicted by the virtual collapse of century-old railway services, a situation stakeholders claim will be luring more investments in the tourism sector.
Since gaining city status some years back, Mwanza City has been striving to enhance tourism and make it the area’s fourth source of income after agriculture, fishing and livestock rearing. Amadeus East Africa, one of the major players in the tourism sector, claimed through its country manager, Mr Renatus Kyakalaba, that Mwanza was fast advancing as an investment hub with the readily available air transport spearheading its goal to become the busiest tourism hub in west of Tanzania .
Mr Kyakalaba was speaking to tourism stakeholders in Mwanza during an occasion to mark the 10th year of Amadeus in East Africa.
Notable achievement Mwanza has attained in its endeavour to turn into a tourist hub, according to Mr Kyakalaba, has been in food industry, infrastructure, ventures in aviation projects, training institutions, tour operations, travel agencies and marketing organisations.
“With hotel occupancy rate of between 70 to 90 per cent daily, Mwanza also provides excellent investment opportunities in construction and management of hotels,” he noted.
For his part, the Tilapia Hotel director, Mr Manjit Sandhu, lauded regional authorities for their efforts to boost tourism and cited upgrading, Saanane Island into a National Park and Mwanza Airport into an international-class flight hub as among the notable achievements.
“The game reserve such as Saanane Island that covers 95 hectares receives many tourists a year. Some of the tourists of this game reserve are students, researchers from Europe and America and local tourists,” he noted.
